Interim Superintendent Entry Plan Phase 2 Update

    2–3 minutes

    MCCSC Interim Superintendent Dr. Markay Winston’s Entry Plan aims to honor the historical academic excellence of the corporation while focusing new energy on aligning resources to achieve the vision and mission of MCCSC’s strategic plan. Phase 2 of her entry plan focused on strengthening family and community partner engagement and establishing a Young Child Advisory Council through open, transparent, and enhanced communication.

    See below for Dr. Winston’s September Phase 2 updates.

    Phase 2: Hitting the Ground Listening & Learning (July – August 2024)

    This phase will focus on strengthening relationships with families and community partners through open, transparent communication. The priority will be to engage in authentic, two-way conversations that foster public trust, build confidence, and address community concerns. By providing a variety of platforms for dialogue, we aim to better understand the needs of students, parents, and staff, while creating meaningful opportunities for input and collaboration. The objective of this phase is to establish a clear communication process that supports ongoing engagement and lays the groundwork for long-term partnerships in the district.

    Actions and Steps Taken During Phase 2

    Parent and Community Engagement

    To support maintaining transparent communication and strengthening our community relations, we’ve held individual sessions with local media, business leaders, and MCCSC union representatives. We have already hosted our first town-hall style meeting on October 9th at Tri-North Middle School from 6-7 p.m and plan to continue these alternating sessions.

    In addition, Highland Park Elementary recently hosted the first “Muffins with Markay” session, offering parents and teachers an informal space to engage with the new Superintendent and share ideas, concerns, and feedback.

    Childs-Templeton Engagement

    A robust series of sessions have been held for teachers, parents, and community members to share their thoughts, ideas, and concerns regarding planning for a successful school merger. Approximately 230 participants
    have provided feedback to inform decision-making. Together we:

    • convened four (4) MCEA/Teacher meetings;
    • held a joint Childs-Templeton PTO meeting;
    • sponsored two (2) parent/guardian meetings;
    • created an online portal for community members to share input on the Childs and Templeton merger.

    Successful School Opening

    Kudos to the staff of MCCSC for a successful school opening! In preparation for the 2024-2025 school year, our teams:

    • facilitated a Legal Seminar Series for all principals;
    • held a 2-day New Teacher Welcome event;
    • held several school opening planning and preparation meetings;
    • participated in the City of Bloomington’s Million Father March held at Fairview Elementary;
    • attended open houses & meet and greets;
    • visited all 23 MCCSC schools.

    Young Child Advisory Group

    In November of 2023, our generous community passed the Family-Centered & Community Focused referendum which prioritizes expanding programs and services for our youngest learners.

    As part of our commitment to our community, we are convening an inaugural advisory group in Fall 2024.
