Dear MCCSC Community: To keep you informed, we will continue to share updates on MCCSC’s Redistricting Study Commission.
In December, the Redistricting Study Commission wrapped up its work.
The Monroe County Community School Corporation extends sincere thanks to the Commission members for their time and dedication over the past nine months. The Commission brought the public’s voice into this important study, and their questions and feedback have been invaluable. As the Board of School Trustees continues their consideration of redistricting, they’ll have the benefit of everything the Commission learned—insights that wouldn’t exist without this group’s participation.

The Commission spent its final meetings in November and December reviewing example redistricted scenarios for elementary, middle, and high schools. The Commission has reviewed 50 example scenarios total.
The scenarios weren’t proposals—they were designed to help the Commission learn. The Redistricting Study Leadership Team created a wide variety of redistricting options because looking at different possibilities would give the Commission the most useful information about the impacts of possible redistricting.
Commission members continued to use the interactive tool created by Dr. John Baeten, Monroe County’s GIS Coordinator. The tool lets members see how different boundary changes could affect things like student enrollment and building capacity at each school.
At the end of each meeting, Commission members shared feedback on how each map aligned with the Board of School Trustees’ two priorities and the top considerations chosen via the Commission and a public survey (300+ responses) in May:
- Balanced socioeconomic status across schools
- Cost effectiveness
- Capacity, Resource Allocation, and Class Sizes
- Minimizing Student Reassignment
- Transportation
- Neighborhood Schools concept
