New choral program inspired by earth, air, fire, water and time includes visual artists

This fall, Monroe County Community School Corporation (MCCSC) students in music and performing arts programs are preparing for the spotlight.
As just one example, students in treble and chamber choirs at Bloomington High School North (BHSN) are preparing for a benefit concert in Puerto Rico this spring in collaboration with a local performing arts school.
BHSN Choral Director Chris Boveroux said that the choral program for the trip is built around the elements earth, air, fire, water, and time. Visual arts students are collaborating by creating companion artwork for the musical pieces (pictured below).
“It’s been rewarding to collaborate with colleagues, including painting teacher Stephanie Bruce. I also enjoy working with students I don’t get to see as singers, but whose creativity and artistic endeavors I get to celebrate,” said Boveroux.
In MCCSC schools, students benefit from comprehensive K-12 arts programs that span musical, visual, and performing arts.
These experiences culminate in high school programs that consistently earn top honors in state and national competitions. This past spring, the Bloomington High School South Choir placed third in the state, and the BHSN Band placed fifth in the Indiana State School Music Association finals. Four MCCSC students also earned Scholastic Art & Writing National Medals.

Students can start their musical journeys early in the Elementary Strings program, in addition to various band, orchestra, and choir options in all three middle schools.
In addition, Fairview Elementary School is an Arts Integration school, offering various “choice” arts classes in addition to regular music, art, physical education, and Spanish classes.
