The Monroe County Community School Corporation (MCCSC) today announced its 2024-2025 Indiana Reading Evaluation and Determination (IREAD) assessment results, showing continued strength in foundational literacy achievement among third-grade students.
- 86.8% of MCCSC third graders passed the 2024-25 IREAD-3, an increase of 3.7% (from 83.1%) in 2023-24.
- 47% of MCCSC students passed the third grade IREAD exam a year early as second graders in 2023-24 and were counted in the 2024-25 overall pass rate.
- Three MCCSC schools achieved 100% pass rates.
- 11 of 13 elementary schools showed an increase in their passing percentages.
“Our students and educators are more committed than ever to literacy development,” said Dr. Markay Winston, MCCSC Superintendent. “I want to especially acknowledge our principals and teachers who have worked tirelessly to support student literacy growth. While we’re pleased with our solid performance, we have plans in place to build upon the strong literacy foundation our schools provide. We recognize our role and responsibility in ensuring that 100% of our students pass the IREAD exam and will be focused on implementing evidence-based practices to support all students and offering individualized support for every learner to help them thrive.”
The IREAD exam is a third grade reading assessment and before the 2024-25 school year, the exam was optional for second grade students. In 2023-24 MCCSC opted to administer IREAD to second grade students, and 47% of students passed and did not have to retake the exam in third grade. These scores were included in MCCSC’s 2024-25 IREAD results.
“When Indiana made IREAD available to second graders on an opt-in basis, it gave our students an early opportunity to pass the exam,” said Alexis Harmon, MCCSC Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment. “It also gave us a chance to provide additional support to students who needed it, through individualized instruction and summer learning opportunities.”
