The Monroe County Community School Corporation (MCCSC) will host its next “Listen and Learn” community listening event at Fairview Elementary School on Tuesday, December 3, from 5:30-7:00 p.m. The event is part of Interim Superintendent Dr. Markay Winston’s Entry Plan to engage with the community and coincides with a chili supper fundraiser to benefit Fairview’s Parent Teacher Organization.
Since her appointment in July 2024, Dr. Winston has held more than 100 community listening sessions in advisory groups of parents, teachers, staff, and community members. Her “Listen and Learn” events are public forums for MCCSC families and the community to get to know Dr. Winston and ask questions in a town hall style format.
“Deepening trust and building relationships is at the heart of my leadership approach,” said Dr. Winston. “In order to build an educational environment that serves the needs of all children, we need to ensure that all voices are heard. Holding listening sessions with diverse groups of parents, teachers, PTOs, staff, business leaders, and community groups — each with different interests — is the best way to do that. I look forward to our next ‘Listen and Learn’ town hall.”
In addition to community listening events, Dr. Winston has been meeting with community leaders, state and local representatives, and serving on numerous advisory groups. In an effort to connect informally with MCCSC families, staff and teachers, Dr. Winston also hosts “Muffins with Markay” events throughout the schools. Student voices have also been elevated in Dr. Winston’s administration. In addition to the existing Student Equity Ambassadors group, the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council was established this month and will play a role in developing MCCSC’s next strategic plan.
