BLOOMINGTON, IND. – Tonight, at the regular meeting of the Board of School Trustees, Dr. Markay Winston Deputy Superintendent for the Monroe County Community School Corporation, presented on Strategic Plan Diversity Goal #2: “Student Discipline Disparity.” This is the second time Dr. Winston has presented on “Student Discipline Disparity” since Strategic Plan presentations began during the 2022-2023 academic year.
In her presentation to the Board, Dr. Winston reviewed discipline data, outlined current efforts and established next steps for the district. Dr. Winston highlighted MCCSC’s work in developing a safe and inclusive schools’ model, which includes the creation of comprehensive student handbooks that are student centered, culturally responsive, and grounded in restorative practices and Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS). Dr. Winston stated, “The professional learning and implementation of a safe and inclusive schools model focuses on creating a positive environment that leads to a reduction of suspensions and expulsions, which ultimately means more time for learning.” The safe and inclusive schools model includes a comprehensive school counseling framework, expanded social workers, trauma-informed care and mental health partnerships.
After presenting and responding to community and staff feedback, Dr. Winston thanked those who provided feedback and invited the community to submit questions and feedback for the February Strategic Plan Spotlight: Communications.
