Redistricting Study Commission – November Update

    1–2 minutes

To keep everyone informed, we are continuing to share regular email updates with the MCCSC community after Redistricting Study Commission meetings and Board of School Trustees meetings.

In November, the Redistricting Study Commission completed its study of various different elementary school redistricting scenarios. Maps redrew school attendance zone lines to balance socioeconomic status across schools.

Commission members studied the maps using the interactive tool created by Dr. John Baeten, Monroe County’s GIS Coordinator. The tool let members see how different boundary changes could affect things like student enrollment and building capacity at each school.

At the end of the meeting, Commission members shared feedback on how each map aligned with the Board of School Trustees’ two priorities and the top considerations chosen via the Commission and a public survey (300+ responses) in May:

    • Balanced socioeconomic status across schools
    • Cost effectiveness
    • Capacity, Resource Allocation, and Class Sizes
    • Minimizing Student Reassignment
    • Transportation
    • Neighborhood Schools concept

    Next Steps

    FALL 2025WINTER 2025SPRING 2026

    Study elementary redistricting scenarios in-depth.
Study middle and high school redistricting scenarios in-depth.
Give School Board informational report summarizing Commission’s work.

    Commission Final Report

The end product of the Redistricting Study Commission will be an informational report to the Board of School Trustees in spring of 2026. The report will not make recommendations.

The report will include peer-reviewed research, the methodology outlining how scenarios were evaluated and reviewed, a review of each Commission meeting, and overall findings from the Commission work.

The Board will determine how to use the information and provide further direction to MCCSC.
